The article is devoted to the peculiarities of the formation of Cherepovets sacred topography from the 16th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. It primarily considers the main stages of Orthodox development and the motives that influenced this process. The author sheds light on the dependence of topographical names of the city on sacred objects and personalities, which was reflected in the names of districts, streets, social and cultural objects and was fixed in the memory of citizens in the form of religious processions and Orthodox traditions. The article draws the conclusions about the uniqueness of these processes in Cherepovets if compared with the areas surrounding the city. In addition, to conduct such a study, it was necessary to analyze the ap-proaches that exist in historiography in this field of research.
