Publication of a New Study on the Contribution of the Soviet Intelligentsia to the Popularization of Science Review of Otechestvennaya intelligentsiya i nauchnaya populyarizatsiya v 1945–1985 gg. [Russian intelligentsia and popularization of science in 1945–1985], by V.V. Komissarov (Ivanovo: Informatika, 2024)

The monograph under review is devoted to the popularization of science in the post-war period of Soviet history and the role of the intelligentsia in this activity. It is emphasized that Vladimir V. Komissarov, the author of the monograph, relied on a wide range of archival sources when writing the book. It is demonstrated that the author thoroughly and objectively investigated the features of the popular science sphere in 1945–85; the review defines his position, vision of the issue, methodology, conceptual and terminological system, historiography and source base of the research as well as the main problems raised in the publication. The monograph under review makes a significant contribution to the study of science popularization conducted by the Soviet intellectuals, providing insight into previously unknown aspects of Soviet science. The book’s logical structure covers various stages of development of the popular science sphere in the USSR during the specified period. This research will be useful for historians and anyone interested in the study of the intelligentsia, history of science, and popular science literature.
